Inspired by the voices of its ancestors, it is the mission of Kulu Mele to preserve, present, and perpetuate the traditional music and dance of West Africa and the African Diaspora and to celebrate contemporary African American culture.

For more than 50 years, Kulu Mele has served audiences and students locally, regionally, and around the world, including at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, the Los Angeles Music Center, in Guinea and Cuba, and as part of the official entertainment for Pope Francis during his 2015 visit to Philadelphia. They feature friendly, smiling, engaging artists; original dance and music created by world-class, culturally competent choreographers and composers; colorful, authentic costumes sourced from indigenous materials; custom-made drums built by hand in Guinea; and a commitment to uphold centuries-old West African cultural traditions and values.
